TIMPANY CENTER’S MISSION
To provide, through multi-agency involvement and San José State University, student service learning, inclusive aquatic and land-based activities that target the promotion of physical health and wellness in individuals with disabilities, obesity, and/or advanced age from the greater Santa Clara County community. The facility is owned by Santa Clara County and has been operating since 2009 by the San José State University (SJSU) College of Health and Human Sciences, Department of Kinesiology, and utilizes the SJSURF for assistance with fiscal and administrative management. 

GENERAL NATURE OF POSITION
Under the general direction of the Program and Operations Director, the incumbent will actively support and further the ongoing development and promotion of the Timpany Center mission, program, policies and procedures but providing hands on direct instruction of a variety of fitness classes. Incumbents will be expected to work with clients as a fitness instructor to provide a safe and welcoming environment.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
•    Plans and leads exercise/activity classes.
•    Sets up class equipment, monitors and ensures its return in serviceable safe condition.
•    Advises management when new equipment is necessary.
•    Advises participants on program and class procedures and policies, as appropriate.
•    Distributes handouts and/or class evaluations, if appropriate, and answers questions from participants after each session; assists in enforcing facility rules and policies.
•    Maintains class rosters as appropriate.
•    Ensures that classes are taught safely and policies and procedures are adhered to by participants to prevent injury; reports accidents and prepares accident reports, as required.
•    Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

INTERPERSONAL CONTACTS
Reports to the Program and Operations Director. Interacts frequently with Timpany Center clients and other fitness staff.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
None.

QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Qualifications

•    Competency in the field of instructional expertise.
•    Technical certification depends on the instructional specialty (AFAA, ACE, NETA, NASM, etc.). In some cases, a completed degree(s) from an accredited institution may be substituted for certification.
    
Additional Requirements

•    Ability to work and communicate effectively with a wide range of individuals in a diverse community.
•    Knowledge of fitness training and education in the area of specialty.
•    Knowledge of exercise principles as they related to the needs of older adults and those with disabilities.
•    Ability to read, understand, follow, and enforce safety procedures. 

Physical Demands
•    Must be able to operate a PC including mouse and keyboard.
•    Must be able to operate general office equipment.
•    Must be able to sit for extended periods of time.
•    Visual acuity associated with concentrated computer use.
•    Must be able to walk, run, jump, climb, swim, sit, lift and carry equipment up to 45 pounds.

Complexity of Duties
•    Be able to demonstrate correct and safe exercises to a diverse population.

Consequently, the successful candidate must undergo and successfully complete the Live Scan (fingerprinting) background check as a condition of their employment.
