JOB DESCRIPTION

The Senior Counsel is a vital member of the Legal Department and Legal Affairs Division, supporting the growth and operations of the company through legal expertise and advisement. This role acts as a subject matter expert, advising stakeholders on legal matters and regulatory or legal risks of relevance to the company. This role will support our Medicare and medical partnerships, state Medicaid programs, and federal government business.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide trusted legal advice and thought partnership to peers, practice group leaders, key clients, and divisional leadership.
  • Maintain expanded knowledge of trends, laws/regulations, and court decisions affecting the company and the industry.
  • Work in close partnership with functional leaders, leveraging legal knowledge and business perspective, to support legal and business outcomes within a functional or product area.
  • Provide business-oriented legal advice to enable risk-based decisions.
  • Develop, review, and negotiate complex, non-standard contracts.
  • Leverage legal expertise to lead or execute projects/initiatives under the direction of a practice group leader or other functional leadership.
  • Represent a practice group or project in internal and external meetings, and develop/deliver presentations on relevant topics including departmental activities and initiatives.
  • As appropriate, escalate and inform legal and risk management issues to practice group leaders.


QUALIFICATIONS

  • 4+ w/Bachelor's degree
  • 7+ years in a regulatory, transaction, or specialized legal role in a law firm or in-house environment with law degree; Healthcare or benefits experience preferred.
  • Preference for Medicare, Medicaid, or state and federal government contracting.
  • Expertise in a legal practice area or business functional area.
  • Ability to educate with every communication, using written and verbal communication to bring clarity and insight to clients and translating complex legal matters into relatable terms.
  • Ability to collaborate cross-functionally.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize work independently while meeting multiple deadlines.
  • Willingness to be adaptable and flexible in both thinking and work style.
  • Strong analytical, advocacy and negotiation skills.
  • Excellent listening and observational skills.
  • Skill in using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions, or approaches to problems.
  • Ability to exhibit leadership skills within the legal team.

Base Pay Information

The national base pay range at the end is a good-faith estimate of what Delta Dental may pay for new hires. Actual pay may vary based on Delta Dental's assessment of the candidate's knowledge, skills, abilities (KSAs), related experience, education, certifications and ability to meet required minimum job qualifications. Other factors impacting pay include prevailing wages in the work location and internal equity. $133,300 - $260,000
