Job Summary

The NRG Oncology Biospecimen Bank at San Francisco is based in the UCSF Department of Radiation Oncology. The Biospecimen Bank is a central repository for biological research samples that have been collected as part of ongoing NRG Oncology clinical trials. There are over 700,000 biospecimens stored in the Biospecimen Bank from patients enrolled in brain, head & neck, lung, GI, prostate and bladder clinical cancer trials. NRG trials with central review require quick turnaround as the results determines if and how the patients are to be treated or removed from clinical trials. Job duties of the Biospecimen Bank Staff Research Associate 1 include logging, tracking, and documenting all relevant information with regard to each specimen. The primary responsibilities of the Staff Research Associate include processing incoming specimens, performing pathology review with pathologists, special kit preparation, organizing and shipping outgoing samples for projects, and scanning slides samples on the Aperio Digital Scanner. The SRA1 will be responsible for time sensitive integral marker projects and database oversight. Other responsibilities include generating summaries of the usability of these biospecimens for use in translational science projects, shipping out of the samples. Other duries may include ordering supplies, contacting vendors for repair, reviewing emails and contacting sites when issues arise.

The candidate will also be required to have a valid California drivers license or 24 hour access to a vehicle and will be one of five back-up persons for off-hours freezer emergencies.

Direct supervision and training will be provided for Staff Research Associate 1.

Department Description

The Department of Radiation Oncology, School of Medicine (SOM), is responsible for a broad range of patient care, teaching, research and public service responsibilities. The Department provides medical students, residents, and post-doctoral fellows in the School of Medicine with programs in research, patient care, teaching and public service. The Department is comprised of three locations including Mt. Zion, Parnassus and Mission Bay and consists of 33 full-time faculty, eight researchers, 13 clinical residents and three physics residents. These operations are administered through various dispersed, interdependent sub-units, which are coordinated through a centralized Administrative Core.

Required Qualifications

  • BA/BS in a related science and knowledge of, or experience with, basic techniques and methods required by the position, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Excellent computer skills including use of Microsoft Excel- pivot tables and basic formulas, Microsoft Word, and Outlook; Adobe Acrobat
  • Ability to communicate in writing, in person and over the telephone; must provide professional and courteous user support
  • Able to multi task efficiently, able to set priorities
  • Must be detail-oriented, and flexible to work schedules and assignments as needed
  • Valid California Driver license and/or access to a vehicle
  • Able to work with cold specimens on Dry Ice

Preferred Qualifications

  • Background in biology
  • Background with Biospecimen Banking or inventory databases
  • Experience with Photoshop, Microsoft Powerpoint, Access
  • Experience with Aperio Digital Scanner
  • Knowledge of Pathology terminology and histology experience
  • Experience with Federal Express online shipping
