Pay Rate

SEIU Professional Pay Grade 9
$41.46/hour (Step 1) - $54.20/hour (Step 5)

Reports To
Administrative Support Officer or a designated supervisory classification in the Documentation Division of the Resiliency and Innovation Department in the Office of Infrastructure Delivery (OID)

Current Assignment
This job announcement will be used to establish a pool of eligible candidates for vacancies that may occur within the next twelve (12) months.

Under general supervision, creates, edits, and coordinates the preparation and publishing of the District's hard copy and electronic publications; coordinates and provides standards for the publication of technical documents; performs the more difficult technical writing; provides lead direction to assigned staff; and performs related duties as assigned.

Incumbents in this classification perform technical support in the preparation, maintenance and control of technical documents, such as engineering specifications, standards, reports, procedures, and maintenance manuals. They work at a high level of independence with responsibility for daily work priorities and standards within established policies and procedures. This is a non-supervisory classification that reviews work performed by others to ensure compliance with District standards and requirements.

This is a SEIU Local 1021 Bargaining unit position. However, All SEIU members must follow the "Bid Form Process", failure to comply will invalidate an employee's application.

The Employment Office will screen bids/applications/resumes against the minimum qualifications. Those candidates who meet the minimum qualifications will be referred to the hiring department for further consideration. The selection process may involve a skills/performance test, written exam, and/or a panel interview. Outside applicants will not be considered until all employees who have applied have been considered first.

Examples of Duties

  1. Creates or revises District standards, specifications, technical bulletins, maintenance procedures, reports and other related technical documents; publishes and distributes various technical documents via document management systems.

  2. Provides document editing and archiving support to engineering divisions for BART Engineering Change Order (BECO) requests relating to operations and maintenance manuals using Microsoft Office Suite programs and document management systems.

  3. Discusses materials and appropriate formats with creators to clarify technical information and format requirements.

  4. Incorporates edits to documents involving specialized, industry language and symbols.

  5. Identifies spelling and grammatical errors and recommends appropriate remedy.

  6. Produces quality work in a fast-paced environment, meeting deadlines and expectations for quality and accuracy.

  7. Establishes and updates standards for development of new maintenance manuals; establishes styles and guidelines for text, graphic layouts, and electronic formats.

  8. Provides feedback to document creators to improve clarity and structure of material.

  9. Builds and maintains effective writer-editor relationships.

  10. Gives direction to printers, graphic artists, writers, and other staff; establishes schedules, obtains cost estimates; and coordinates services required to produce publications.

  11. Operates computers, photocopiers, scanners, plotters, and printers in the preparation, distribution, and maintenance of technical documents.

  12. Uses computer systems and software programs to maintain records and files of publications and related distribution lists to ensure configuration control.

Minimum Qualifications

Education:
A bachelor's degree in English, journalism, communications, or a closely related field from an accredited college or university.
Experience:
The equivalent of one (1) year of full-time verifiable professional experience in planning, coordinating, creating, editing, maintaining, and reviewing technical publication documents.
Substitution:
Additional professional experience as outlined above may be substituted for the education on a year-for-year basis. Post-graduate education in the fields specified above can substitute for the experience requirement on a year-for-year basis. A bachelor's degree is preferred.

Knowledge and Skills

Knowledge of:
  • Techniques for planning, coordinating, and reviewing work.
  • Systems and methods for cataloging and indexing technical documents.
  • Equipment, media, formats, and materials used in preparing, publishing, storing, and accessing electronic documentation and graphics.
  • Procedures, standards and guidelines for acceptance and control of technical documents.
  • Principles and practices of technical writing, editing, and publishing.
  • Technical engineering terminology and schematic symbols.
  • Techniques for planning, coordinating and reviewing work.
Skill in:
  • Reviewing and analyzing documentation for adherence to standards, codes, and guidelines.
  • Planning, coordinating, and reviewing the work of others.
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Scheduling and coordinating publishing with other departments and outside agencies.
  • Writing and editing clear, concise, understandable technical instructions, procedures, reports and related documentation.
  • Using various software applications such as Adobe Acrobat, Adobe InDesign, and CoreIDRAW to create and publish illustrated documents.
  • Using document management systems such as Fusion.
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Client-service focus.
  • Ability to effectively manage expectations and multiple deadlines.
  • Ability to be detail-oriented with attention to detail, spelling and grammar skills.
